Finally, I received The Versatile Blogger Award from Naida and Iliana and I couldn't thank them both enough! I always enjoy reading their blogs and they are very talented too! (How I wish I've Naida's crocheting skills and also to be able to make those beautiful journals like the way Iliana does!)

Now the rule of the award is to list seven things about me and to pass it on to 15 friends. Here goes:

1) When I was a teenager, my favourite pop groups are Bananarama and New Kids on the Block. I also love songs by Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. (I still have all their cassettes, though I doubt they can be played again. Anyway where can one find a cassette player these days?)

2) One of my favourite subjects in school is Arts, besides Chinese language that is.

3) If I've some spare time, I'd like to learn Japanese.

4) I love most fruits, and I know dragon fruit are nutritious but I don't really like it as I find the taste bland (I heard from the fruitsellers that those with pink flesh usually taste sweeter than the white ones).

5) My first ARC is an anthology titled Bad Boys to Go by Lori Foster, which I won it from her contest.

6) I don't really like sewing, but I do like cross-stitching (though I haven't done so for years). Go figure.

7) I go for hair rebonding every once a year because I have natural wavy hair.

As always, I have difficulty naming just a few blogger friends as I feel everyone of you deserves this award. If you like, do share some of the seven things about you so that I can get to know you better?

In regard to the primary school registration, my husband received a call from the primary school this morning that there would be a balloting this Friday since the number of children registered exceeded their limit. Thus, I'd be away this Friday to witness the balloting. *sigh* I'd appreciate it if you could send some good vibes our way!

I have heard a lot of great things about Shaun Tan's work, but just haven't got around to reading them yet. It was only last week when I was browsing at a bookstore that I stumbled upon this little gem. Without saying, I grabbed a copy off the shelves and I'm happy to say I have now owned one Shaun Tan book (and of course am looking forward for more to come).

Eric is a cute little story about a family hosting a foreign exchange student by the name of - yes, Eric. (Below illustration is how he looked like. Oh don't you find him adorable?)

With black and white illustrations, they capture the essence of Eric's personality and his 'cultures' during his stay with the family. Always curious and keen to learn, Eric slowly adapts to the environment around him.

What I loved most about this book is besides the wonderful illustrations, Shaun Tan has creatively weaved a story based on our everyday lives, through the eyes of little Eric. It also tells a story about the family accepting Eric despite their differences. Eric's stay with the family might seem short, but his experience has allowed me to look at things from a different angle. As for the ending, it brought a smile to my face and touched my heart. How I wish this story would be a little longer!

I feel so loved because I received not one but two awards this week! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

The Versatile Blogger Award comes from Karen at Finding My Muse and though I'm new to Karen's blog, I'm already liking her blog and have added the link onto my Google Reader.

For this award, I must share seven things about myself and then pass it on to 15 blogs I read. I have no problems with coming up with the seven things, but passing it on to 15 blogs is hard because I have so many in mind!

Anyway, here's a list of seven things about me:

1. I love green tea (genmai tea too). I can have three teabags per day!
2. My best dish used to be prawns fried with oyster sauce, but since I've became a vegetarian, my best dishes now are soba and yasai tempura (because they are so easy to prepare, haha).
3. I bought many Sweet Dreams books through eBay last year (young adult romances printed during the 80s) because I just felt nostalgic for those good old days I read them.
4. I know many of my friends have celebrities as their idols. As for me, it's Lu "Louis" Chen.
5. The farthest country I've been is New Zealand; that's where I went for my honeymoon.
6. I'd love to be a librarian, but that's only my wishful thinking!
7. I love tulips!

Up until this point nobody could predict the impact this film would have on society, or maybe nobody really understood how powerful Geroge Lucas's Jedi mind control was. I came away on that life-altering day with an orange R2-D2 badge bought from the concession stand and a Princess Leia Star Wars paper drinking cup, and still felt I'd come out a winner.

Blogger Unplugged (and an award)

As from tomorrow onwards, I am taking my leave off from work so that means I have more time to spend with my family. With two young children at home, I have no idea if I am able to squeeze some time off for my reading and blogging so I guess the Blogger Unplugged Challenge (hosted by Beth Fish Reads and Devourer of Books) is fitting to me at this time.

I have only a few scheduled posts lined up and though I may not be able to visit your blogs (who knows? Well, I can easily share with you seven things about myself but it sure is hard to nominate only seven bloggers!

Let me start off the easy task first:

1. I love watching romantic comedies (I got a DVD - Serendipity starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale last week. Oh, I loved this movie!).
2. I have only watched a movie alone in a cinema once.
3. My favourite sandwich is Subway's Veggie Delite with lots of honey mustard sauce (minus the onions and chillies).
4. When I was a child, my favourite cartoon character is Strawberry Shortcake.
5. I have a driving licence but I don't drive (don't have a car too).
6. My very first pen pal is a girl from Vienna, Austria. Unfortunately, we have lost touch many years ago.
7. I have an idol lately, and he is none other than the Taiwanese renowned magician, Lu Chen (He won the Taiwan's Youth Magic Contest which was judged by world-famous magician, David Copperfield at the age of 12). I have just finished reading his autobiography and it was an inspirational read.

Monday Miscellaneous

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about the read-a-thon…

Are you planning on participating in the upcoming 24 Hour Read-a-thon (either as a reader or cheerleader)? Have you made any preparations for the event? And, veterans out there, any tips you’d like to share with the newbies?

I have not joined any of the read-a-thon since I know it is impossible for me to read a book (let alone a few books!) without any interruption from my two young children at home. Still, I know it is so much fun and I hope to participate in another year or two when they are much older and do not need my attention so much.

I also find it fun to read what other particpants have chosen to read for the read-a-thon and I look forward to reading their posts when that day for the event arrives! I am not sure if I have the opportunity to logon the computer and cheer everyone on (my regular readers will know I hardly access to my computer during the weekends) but I will be with you all in spirit!

So are you participating as a reader or a cheerleader in the upcoming read-a-thon?

When’s the last time you weeded out your library? Do you regularly keep it pared down to your reading essentials? Or does it blossom into something out of control the minute you turn your back, like a garden after a Spring rain?

Or do you simply not get rid of books? At all?
And–when you DO weed out books from your collection (assuming that you do) …what do you do with them? Throw them away (gasp)? Donate them to a charity or used bookstore? SELL them to a used bookstore? Trade them on Paperback Book Swap or some other exchange program?

I was late for this but I loved last week's question so I will answer them anyway.

I have not weeded my library for some time. I used to categorize my books in genre but I have given up doing so after I have lose control of buying and adding books to my pile so nowadays, they are categorized as 'read' or 'unread'. I try to keep all the books I read into boxes but that is becoming an issue to me since I am running out of space for everything (be it the TBR pile or books I read).

I do not believe in throwing books away as I know there is bound to be someone out there who would appreciate them so I will either put them on my inventory list on BookMooch, host a giveaway at my blog or donate them to any organizations who are in need of them.

What about you? What would you do to the books that you do not want to keep?

Books Talk and Some Awards

I am back from my short blogging break. I know, it is nothing much of a big deal but I sure missed you all! So what did I do during the break? I spent loads of time with my daughters, especially my 1-year-old since my eldest one goes to the childcare during the daytime. And I had also spent some time reading Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins when my little one was napping and I want to tell you I couldn't stop reading that book because it is so intense!

I am also happy to receive some books I ordered from The Book Depository a while back. Here are what I got: I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith (thanks to Nymeth's review), The Turn of the Screw by Henry James and I'm Looking Through You: Growing Up Haunted: A Memoir by Jennifer Finney Boylan (thanks to Eva's review). I visited the bookstore during lunchtime earlier and I was so thrilled to find Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger on shelves so of course I had to grab it! So, did you buy any books lately?

Musing Mondays - Gift Certificates

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about gift certificates…

Do you give gift certificates to book stores as presents? If so, do you give for actual stores or online stores? Do you like to receive them yourself?

Oh, I am sure every book lovers would love to receive gift certificates as gifts! Likewise, I like giving gift certificates as gifts but I rarely do so since most of my friends and family does not read as much as I do. I think there was one occasion in which I bought someone a gift certificate to a bookstore and later he/she (I honestly cannot remember who) told me very nicely that it would be better if I bought any other gift certificate than a bookstore gift certificate in future because he/she hardly reads. Thus, my initial intention of getting that person to read didn't happen. From then onwards, I know it is always better not to give a bookstore gift certificate to a non-reader, no matter how good my intention it is, hehe.
